A creative twist? John Mayer had a few tweaks for Taylor Swift‘s song “Lover,” the title track off of her newest album on the November 17 episode of his web show, Current Mood. The singer had Shawn Mendes — who recently collaborated with the blonde beauty — on as a guest and they were quite the dynamic duo. Although John and Taylor had a brief romance that ended with her song called “Dear John” — which fans believe is written about their relationship — he still isn’t afraid to poke a little fun at his ex.

“I also want to say I like the song. I like the song very much. And, I’m only going to say one thing and I know it’s going to go far and wide throughout the media, but I’m a guy, I’m a musician. I [can] talk about a song,” the 42-year-old prefaced his critique while noting that he also enjoyed Shawn’s additional verse in the remix. “Love the song. I really like the song. I get a little chuckle because she says, ‘We can keep the Christmas lights up ‘til January.’ And I go, ‘You’re insane!’ Everyone keeps their Christmas lights up ‘til January.”

He offered his own rendition of the questionable line. “We can keep the Christmas lights up ‘til January / And then about January 5, we’ll take the lights down,” the musician sang. “And we’ll put ‘em in a box and we’ll label that box ‘Christmas lights’ / Yeah, we’ll put ‘em in the attic ‘til next December.”

Taylor, 29, and John went their separate ways in February 2010, and she has very different drama to worry about these days. She has recently been feuding with Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun over the rights to the music she previously recorded for Big Machine Records. She accused the music execs of squashing her upcoming performance at the 2019 American Music Awards — where she will be recognized as Artist of the Decade — and a secret Netflix documentary.

“Right now, my performance at the AMAs, the Netflix documentary and any other recorded events I am planning to play until November of 2020 are a question mark,” she wrote in a lengthy statement to fans that she posted on all her social media accounts. “I love you guys and I thought you should know what’s been going on.”

Big Machine responded to these claims on their website on November 15. “Taylor, the narrative you have created does not exist. All we ask is to have a direct and honest conversation,” the music powerhouse wrote. “When that happens, you will see there is nothing but respect, kindness and support waiting for you on the other side.”

It seems like John and Taylor are ready to leave the past in the past — at least when it comes to their former fling!
