After Bam Margera’s public cry for Dr. Phil McGraw’s help, the TV doctor is finally speaking out about the former reality star’s outlandish ways in recent weeks. On Wednesday, September 4, he sat with Jimmy Kimmel and discussed Bam’s condition and progress during his most recent stint in rehab.
“He started posting things, I guess, on Instagram or whatever. He was down in Austin in a hotel room, kind of, on his own. He started saying ‘I’m in trouble, and I don’t trust anybody except Dr. Phil. Like, no pressure,” the 68-year-old explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. “He says, ‘I’ll talk to him. I’ll do anything he says.'”
“When I see a young man that’s in trouble and asking for help, my ears perk up,” Dr. Phil said in the promo for his upcoming episode with the 39-year-old. Dr. Phil added how he invited Bam to come speak with him and he arrived ready to talk the very next day.
Following their meeting, he put the former pro skaterboarder in a detox facility which he left after one day without permission. During his rendezvous, he got a tattoo of Dr. Phil’s name. “He’s a fan, but I would have preferred he stayed where he was,” the famous Doc said. He continued that later that night Bam was arrested at the Luxe Hotel in Hollywood. The arrest came after a bizarre standoff with authorities, police confirmed to In Touch. Just hours later he was released on $1000 bail.
After all the hubbub, Dr. Phil is happy to report that he has high hopes for Bam and his recovery. “Now, I think he’s really making a concerted, sincere effort to turn things around, which I really hope he does because he’s got a lot of young people that really look up to him,” he said. “But I gotta say: It’s not a success-only journey. He’s in rehab. Look, when you really have a problem with drugs or alcohol, it’s not unusual for there to be six or seven relapses before you finally get a grip on it. So, who knows if this will be the time.”
Bam’s episode of Dr. Phil is set to air on September 9.
