The holidays have a way of bringing people together and that seems to be the case for Ariana Grande and her estranged dad, Edward Butera. On Christmas, the pop star shared a black and white photo on her Instagram Story that showed she was FaceTiming him.
It’s no secret to the world that Ari has had a tough year, so thankfully, reconnecting with her dad is an upside. In 2013, she fell out of touch with her father, according to a Seventeen magazine cover interview the following year. At the time, she described it as “the toughest thing” she ever had to go through.
“It’s private, but it happened last year. It took me so long to be OK with it. The thing that got me there was embracing the fact that that I am made up of half my dad, and a lot of my traits come from him. So much of me comes from my father, and for so long, I didn’t like that about myself. I had to accept that it’s okay not to get along with somebody and still love them,” she told the outlet.
For the most part, the public hasn’t heard or seen anything regarding Edward, with the exception of her chart-topping single, “thank u, next,” in which she gets candid about her parents’ relationship.

“One day I’ll walk down the aisle/ holding hands with my mama/ I’ll be thanking my dad ’cause she grew from the drama,” she sang toward the end of the song. Ari’s mom, Joan Grande, and her dad got divorced when she was eight years old and often times, she’s said her parents’ split is what first made her seek therapy.
It looks like Ariana is ending 2018 on a strong note. We wish her the best for the upcoming year.
