Comedian Ricky Gervais has been named Person of the Year by animal-rights group PETA.
"At a time when social media influences the outcome of everything from presidential elections to concert bookings, Ricky Gervais, who keeps his 5.3 million Twitter followers informed on animal rights issues in a witty and irreverent — yet relevant — way, has been named PETA’s 2013 Person of the Year," the group, whose name stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said in their official statement.

The former Golden Globes host often uses his social media accounts to post pictures of animals and has been known to share any photos of people watching or holding DVDs of his show Derek if they include a pet in the picture. He has also joked that lab experiments should be done on internet trolls instead of on animals.

The original creator of The Office also recently campaigned to have animal testing banned at a university in his native Britain.
