Congrats Pete Wentz — you’re officially part of the celebrity death hoax club!
A fake news story with the headline, “Man Takes Selfie Moments Before Deadly Shark Attack,” hit the web late last week identifying Pete as James Crowlett, a 34-year-old insurance salesman from Oregon who had tragically died in a freak shark attack after capturing the epic, underwater selfie.
The article was accompanied with Pete’s real underwater selfie photoshopped on top of a terrifying shark pic—an image that was circulating around Tumblr last year.
Pete, ever the good-sport, even Tweeted about the hilarious hoax:
