He’s a long way from Dunder Mifflin! John Krasinski’s birthday is on October 20, and in honor of the occasion, we decided to take a look at how the actor has changed since he first graced us with his presence on the small screen, behind Jim Halpert’s desk.

These days, John is happily married to Emily Blunt, and they’ve been together since November 2008. (The couple wed in July 2010.) They share two beautiful daughters — Hazel and Violet — and John got a starring role in the Amazon thriller series Jack Ryan, which premiered in August 2018. Oh, did we mention he produces the series, too? Basically, the dude is doing pretty well for himself these days. But just for fun, let’s take a look back at how he got to where he is now.

“The Office”

Fun fact: John co-starred in a play written and cast by his The Office co-star B. J. Novak when they were high school seniors together at Newton South High School outside Boston. The Office, of course, became his breakthrough role when he was cast in 2004.

Love, Love, Love

A remake of the British show of the same name, John played the role of Jim Halpert from 2005 to 2013. In particular, America fell in love with his relationship with Jenna Fischer’s Pam Beesly. Jim is easily his most well-known role.

“License to Wed”

But of course, John has played several other parts, too. For instance, he starred in the romantic comedy License to Wed with Mandy Moore and the late, great Robin Williams, released in 2007.

“Leatherheads”

He also appeared with Renée Zellweger and George Clooney in George’s 2008 sports comedy film Leatherheads. He played a college football star and war hero and proved he could play a slightly “tougher” role.

John was also in the 2009 movie Away We Go. He played a lead role with another comedic favorite, Maya Rudolph.

The Wifey

That was not long after John met the love of his life, Emily. They met through a mutual friend at a restaurant in 2008. “I was sort of aware that he was vaguely recognizable,” Emily said on Late Night With Seth Meyers. “It’s like kind of a sad, lame story. Not sad, it’s just kind of lame. I was sitting with a mutual friend. My friend goes, ‘Oh my god, there is my friend John’ and that was it! It’s cinema gold.”

“Something Borrowed”

In 2011, John co-starred with Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson and Colin Egglesfield in Something Borrowed. It was based on a book and John received mostly favorable reviews for the role.

Captain America?

He was also one of the top candidates to play Steve Rogers — a.k.a. Captain America — in Captain America: The First Avenger around that time. Can you imagine if John was a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe today?

He went on to star in, co-produce and co-wrote the screenplay for Promised Land, a drama film, with Matt Damon.

He also became a father for the first time in 2014! He and Emily welcomed Hazel in February 2014.

He wrote on Twitter on February 16, 2014, “Wanted to let the news out directly. Emily and I are so incredibly happy to welcome our daughter Hazel into the world today! Happy bday!”

John continued to act, write, and produce while adjusting to becoming a dad. He seemed to work with everyone in Hollywood.

“Lip Sync Battle”

In 2014, John, Stephen Merchant and Jimmy Fallon pitched the idea for Lip Sync Battle to NBC. The network passed, but it was eventually picked up by the Spike TV channel. It went on to become a major success.

Baby No. 2

Baby No. 2 for John and Emily arrived in 2016. On July 4, 2016, the actor shared the good news about their new addition on Twitter again.“What better way to celebrate the 4th … than to announce our 4th family member!!!” he wrote. “Two weeks ago we met our beautiful daughter Violet #Happy4th.”

In fact, John was pretty busy in 2016. For starters, he starred in the world premiere of the Off-Broadway play Dry Powder that ran from March to May 2016. He received the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Debut Performance for that role. Pretty impressive for a guy who started out as a paper salesman!

He also starred in Michael Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi that same year.

“A Quiet Place”

Then in 2018, John directed and co-wrote the horror film A Quiet Place. He co-starred with his wife, and had nothing but great things to say about acting skills. “I’ve always been the biggest fan of her, but not until you’re in the room when she does what she does do you know why she’s so phenomenal,” he said on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. “She’s unbelievable. The most talented, powerful … kindest person. She makes everyone around her better. So honestly, that was my experience.”

Box Office Bonanza

The movie was a huge box office hit. So much so, in fact, that a sequel is scheduled to be released on March 20, 2020.

“Jack Ryan”

Finally, John plays the title character in the series Jack Ryan. He’s actually the fifth actor to portray the character after Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine.
