The trailer for Ava DuVernay‘s next project is here — and it’s incredibly moving. In When They See Us, the filmmaker tells the true crime story of the Central Park Five, five teenagers — four black and one hispanic — who were convicted of various charges after being accused of attacking and sexually assaulting a woman jogging in Central Park. In 1989, Trisha Meili was attacked, and the boys quickly became suspects in the crime. In 1990, they were convicted in two separate trials and the boys individually served between six and 13 years behind bars before they were exonerated. In 2002, the charges against them were dropped and their convictions were vacated after a convicted murderer and serial rapist, who was serving a life sentence in prison, confessed to the crime. The trailer for the Netflix original series dropped on April 19, the 30th anniversary of the crime. Check it out in the video above.
