When you know, you know. In a rare interview, Cameron Diaz talked about her marriage to musician Benji Madden and how she might not have been ready to wed when she was at the altar.

“I don’t know if I was ready [when I got married], but I knew Benji was special. He’s just a good man. There’s no bulls–t. It’s really refreshing. I’m really grateful for him,” Cameron, 46, told InStyle Magazine on Tuesday, August 6, about her rock star husband, 40.

“Getting married to him was the best thing that ever happened to me,” the retired actress continued. “My husband’s the best. He’s the greatest human being, and he’s my great partner. Marriage is certainly hard, and it’s a lot of work. You need somebody who’s willing to do the work with you, because there’s no 60-40 in marriage. It’s 50-50, period. All the time.”

As Cameron embarks on a new chapter in her life, she wants to focus on the things that matter most to her, specifically, Benji. “I just want to build better, stronger friendships with the people who are in it with me. Of course, that includes my husband.”

The couple wed back in 2015 after officially meeting in 2014. Cameron was introduced to the rocker through her pal Nicole Richie who is married to Benji’s brother, Joel Madden. After a whirlwind romance, the couple wed in a surprise wedding and exchanged vows in front of about 100 guests. The wedding had quite a few hiccups including a wardrobe malfunction and dropping the couples’ rings during the ceremony.

The feelings are definitely mutual. Most recently the Good Charlotte singer wrote his wife a touching Valentine’s Day note on Instagram. “Light of my life ❤️ Only thing that could rival your beauty is your heart ❤️ I’m very Grateful❤️Happy Valentine’s❤️,” the singer wrote. Looks like you made the right decision, Cameron!
