Hey, when you’ve got the platform, you might as well use it. Singer Halsey did just that when she acted as both host and musical guest on the February 9 episode of Saturday Night Live. The 24-year-old clearly wanted to make her appearance memorable, as being asked to play both roles during the variety show is an honor that isn’t bestowed on all musicians. Trust us, considering how she used her performance opportunity to call out a cheating ex, we’d say she definitely succeeded.
During Halsey’s first musical performance, she played her hit single “Without Me” in an incredible black mesh gown. But her look wasn’t the only scene stealer of the evening. The wall behind her as she performed was seemingly scrawled with the transgressions of one of her past loves.
“Ashley, I cheated … in Minneapolis … New Orleans … at home in Los Angeles,” the wall read. It was pretty clear she was sending a message here. Halsey (real name Ashley Nicolette Frangipane) still has some bad blood with her most recent ex, G-Eazy, so fans were quick to speculate that her performance had something to do with the rapper.
But it’s not a huge shocker, TBH, because this isn’t the first time the singer has alluded to her 29-year-old ex during this track. In fact, the music video for “Without Me” featured a dude who looked a little too much like the rapper, so it seems as though G was always associated with this track in her head.
“The story is a reflection of a combination of relationships I’ve been in, or watched the people I love go through,” she wrote on Instagram in her original announcement for the video’s release. “It’s a reminder that you deserve more. And it’s okay to not want to be taken advantage of.”
Halsey and G, a.k.a. Gerald Gillum, called it quits in October 2018 after a year of dating.
