Jana Duggar Shares Her Closet Organization Tips to Keep You From Becoming ‘Clutter Blind’

It’s upsettingly easy to get distracted when you’re trying to clean out your closet. Luckily, Jana Duggar, a master of all things DIY, has some tips and tricks for tackling the task. On Saturday, November 30, the Counting On star revealed she was taking on a new project as she sorted through her wardrobe. While revealing her new, totally tidy space, she decided to share her advice with everyone else.

“Sometimes I feel like I become ‘clutter blind.’ 🙈 Things tend to pile up over time, especially when it comes to clothes!” Jana, 29, told her fans. “Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the mess and amount of things you own? I know I do … I just have way too many things! Most of it hardly gets used. That’s why I am purging my closet! So here it goes … I’m pulling everything out, sorting through it and putting it into three separate piles.”

The three separate piles include things she wants to keep, hold onto and sort and give away. If she keeps something, that means she’s “used it in the past two months and love it!” If she has “not used it in over two months,” she’ll hold onto it and sort it. If she hasn’t used it “over the next two months … [she] must give it away.” Everything she’s already sure “hasn’t worked” for her is going directly into the “give away” pile. She included photos of her process in an Instagram album, showing off her tidy “keep” clothes, a heap of “hold on” items and a small stack of “give away” options.

It sounds easy enough — and it just may have convinced her sister-in-law Anna Duggar (née Keller) to kick things into high gear and do a little decluttering herself. “You are so inspiring!” the new mom of six commented. “Some day I hope to be as organized as you are!” Other fans also chimed in with praise. “This is a great idea!” one commented. “You did a fabulous job. My turn is coming up soon!” said a second.

They also had some tips of their own to share. “If I put something new in — I take something out,” one fan wrote. Another added, “At the beginning of the new year, I clean out my closet and give away a lot … [I] turn on the hangers backward and at the end of the year when I do the clean out, if they are still backwards, [that means] I didn’t wear it, so it goes!!!” Others mentioned the Marie Kondo method, which Jana’s sister Jinger Vuolo (née Duggar) tried out last year.

Some couldn’t help but giggle about the star’s lack of progress, though. While her closet looked clean afterward, fans noted that she held onto a lot more than she got rid of. “Hahaha, the giveaway pile is hilarious. I actually LOL,” one teased. “Ha ha, love that ‘give away’ is the smallest pile — it always happens to me too!” commented another. “But [it’s] one step closer to a less cluttered closet. :)”
