In the wake of Saoirse Kennedy Hill’s death, her father, Paul Michael Hill, conquered his fear of heights and water in his late daughter’s honor. On Wednesday, August 7, her grandfather, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, shared the special moment on Instagram. “Saoirse’s Dad, Paul Hill, has a terror of both heights and water. Having grown up in the Catholic ghetto of the Falls Road in Belfast and spent most of his adult life in 38 British prisons, he never learned to swim,” he captioned the photo. “Nevertheless, he wanted to jump off the HH buoy in Saoirse’s honor. He asked us to be there to rescue him when he hit the water.” Scroll through the gallery below to see him take the sentimental plunge.

Saoirse Kennedy Hill Father Paul Hill Conquers Fear Heights Water Honor

The political figure also shared photos with his late granddaughter highlighting the happy young adult she was. The beach beauty died on August 1, at the age of 22 from an apparent overdose at the family’s compound. According to family friends, Kennedy Hill was taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Massachusetts on Thursday afternoon, where she was pronounced dead.

“Our hearts are shattered by the loss of our beloved Saoirse,” the Kennedy family said in a statement. “Her life was filled with hope, promise and love.” Her grandmother Ethel Kennedy added, “The world is a little less beautiful today.”

Kennedy Hill was a student at Boston College, where she was studying communications and was vice president of the College Democrats. She was expected to graduate in 2020.

Kennedy Hill had been open about her struggles with mental illness. “My depression took root in the beginning of my middle school years and will be with me for the rest of my life,” she wrote back in 2016 in a personal essay for the student newspaper at Deerfield Academy. “Although I was mostly a happy child, I suffered bouts of deep sadness that felt like a heavy boulder on my chest. These bouts would come and go, but they did not outwardly affect me until I was a new sophomore at Deerfield.” Kennedy Hill even revealed she “attempted to take my own life” at one point.
