We saw a lot of drama on MTV's Jersey Shore — and we'll see a lot more in the upcoming revival of the reality show — but some of the most chaotic events in the cast's lives happened off-camera. For example, Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and his brother Marc pleaded guilty to a tax evasion charge earlier this year, and they'll receive their sentencing in less than a month, at which point they could be thrown in jail.
What was Mike charged with?
Originally, the situation for these Sorrentinos was a lot more severe: Both brothers faced multiple charges just a few years ago. In 2014, the Department of Justice proclaimed that Mike had been charged with one count of conspiracy, two counts of filing false tax returns for 2010 through 2012, and one count for allegedly failing to file a tax return for 2011; while Marc had been charged with one count of conspiracy and three counts of filing false tax returns. At the time, both Mike and Marc pleaded not guilty. (In 2015, tax preparer Gregg Mark pleaded guilty to filing fraudulent tax returns for the brothers.)Then, in 2017, the Sorrentinos' legal issues got even worse. Mike was charged with tax evasion and structuring funds to evade currency transaction reports, while Marc was charged with falsifying records to obstruct a grand jury investigation.
Did he plead guilty?
As part of his plea deal this January, Mike confessed to hiding some of his taxable income from 2011 in order to avoid his full tax burden. He also admitted to depositing cash deposits in increments under $10,000 so those deposits would fly under the IRS's radar. "Today, Michael Sorrentino has come to terms with mistakes he made at a very different and tumultuous time in his life," his attorneys said after the plea bargain was struck, per Forbes. The brothers' sentencing is set for April 25, and Mike's attorneys hope the courts will "impose a fair sentence" that reflects the law-abiding life the 35-year-old has lived in the past few years.
Is The Situation going to jail?
Potentially. Per TMZ. Here's hoping Mike keeps his temper in check and his finances above board!
