Every year, it seems like the Grammy Awards forget to mention an iconic musician we lost during their In Memoriam segment, and every year, fans are crushed by the exclusion. At the 2019 awards on February 10, rapper XXXTentacion was the one left off the sentimental slideshow, and fans quickly rushed to Twitter with their outrage.

“Yo how did they not have XXX in the In Memoriam segment at #GRAMMYs,” said one angry fan. A second agreed, writing, “Damn @RecordingAcad didn’t even put xxx in the ‘in memoriam’ part of the grammy’s. They put lil peep in last year.” “Shame on y’all showing everyone in Memoriam leaving out @xxx #GRAMMYs #Grammy2019” a third chimed in.

While many were upset by the exclusion, others were less bothered on the basis of XXX’s legal troubles and domestic abuse allegations before death. “Yo shoutout to the Grammys for having the balls to not have xxx on the in memoriam,” said one. Another fan still felt he should have been acknowledged, especially since he died so young. “And where was XXX during the In Memoriam segment? Allegations aside, the man deserved to be recognized. #GRAMMYs.”

20-year-old XXXTentacion, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, was murdered on June 18, 2018. He was leaving a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida, when two men in a black SUV approached him while he was still in the driver’s seat of his car. They stole a Louis Vuitton bag and then shot him several times. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Several of XXX’s songs have hit the charts since he passed away, including his single “SAD!” and “Arms Around You,” which also features Lil Pump, Maluma and Swae Lee.

So many amazing musicians were lost over the past year, though most were luckily included in the segment of music’s biggest night. Three of the most notable — due to their young ages — were rappers Mac Miller and XXX and DJ Avicii. Mac tragically overdosed at just 26 years old on September 7 in his Studio City, California home. The “Self Love” singer had always been open about his struggles with mental health and drug addiction, and fans were devastated to learn that he had finally succumbed to his battle.

Sadly, the world also lost the icon Aretha Franklin on August 16, 2018. The queen of soul lost her battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 76, and the world will certainly never forget her impact. Our hearts go out to all of the friends, family, and fans of all of the amazing artists who passed in 2018.
