SPOILER ALERT! Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) swore to kill Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever) after she brutally murdered Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) in The Last of Us season 2, shattering not only Joel’s legs but also the hopes of fans everywhere that the show would stray from one of the most controversial storylines in the video game franchise.

In Touch takes an inside look into what happens next in the game and if Ellie will ever get her own revenge.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

Why Did Abby Kill Joel in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2?

Joel agrees to turn Ellie over to the Fireflies after being told they could use her mysterious immunity to the Cordyceps brain infection (CBI) to develop a cure back in season 1. However, when they let it slip that the teenager will die in the process, Joel storms back into the hospital and kills several members of the rebel group – including Dr. Jerry Anderson, who was planning to create the vaccine – and takes her back to live with a community of survivors in Jackson, Wyoming.

It’s later revealed that Dr. Anderson’s heartbroken and furious daughter, Abby, is determined to find and kill Joel for what he did to her father and her friends.

Five years after Joel and Ellie’s escape, Abby closes in on the Jackson community and manages to lure Joel into an abandoned lodge during a snowstorm. Once she has him trapped, she tortures him before eventually stabbing him in the neck with a golf club. Ellie tragically arrives just in time to see him die. Screaming and sobbing, she swears that she is going to kill Abby for what she’s done.

Does Ellie Kill Abby in ‘The Last of Us: Part II’?

Will Ellie eventually kill Abby in 'The Last of Us'?

Warning: Do not read further if you do not want spoilers for the ending of the game. This will likely span over both season 2 and season 3 of the show.

Joel’s murder sparks the main plot of The Last of Us: Part II video game – Ellie’s trek from Jackson, Wyoming, to Seattle, Washington, to find Abby and the rest of her group and to avenge his death. Joined by Dina (Isabela Merced) and Jesse (Young Mazino), Ellie finds herself stumbling down a path fueled by anger, bitterness and grief as she slowly appears to lose pieces of her humanity with every person she kills – mirroring Abby’s own revenge mission against Joel.

Meanwhile, in the game, Abby is on her own journey of painful self-reflection and redemption as she realizes that revenge left her feeling empty, not whole. During this time, she meets two siblings – Lev and Yara – who fled from a cult. Over time, she grows close to them, similarly to how Joel and Ellie bonded on their trek in the first season.

Toward the end of the game, when finally given the chance to kill Ellie, Abby spares her life, and they go their separate ways.

Haunted by not getting her revenge, a few months later, Ellie leaves to find Abby again. Once she does, the two eventually lock into a wild fight for survival. At one point, Ellie gets the upper hand and nearly drowns her. But at the last moment, she realizes that this isn’t what Joel would have wanted for her, and she decides to let her go.
