With so many celebrities rocking blue ribbons at the 2017 Emmys on Sunday, Sept. 17, fans can’t help but wonder why the accessory was such a hit among TV’s biggest names at this year’s ceremony. From Padma Lakshmi and Elizabeth Moss to Judith Light and Ann Dowd, many stars wore the small pin to make a big statement.

Just like Oscar attendees did earlier this year, a handful of stars at the Emmys wore the blue ribbon in support of the American Civil Liberties Union and their “Stand With the ACLU” initiative. In case you’re unfamiliar, the ACLU is a bi-partisan, non-profit organization that has been dedicated to protecting individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and law of the U.S. for nearly 100 years.

When stars rocked blue ribbons at the Oscars, Michele Moore, ACLU chief communications officer, told The Hollywood Reporter that the organization greatly appreciated all the support they’ve received from Hollywood. “We have been incredibly heartened by the outpouring of support for the ACLU from the entertainment community at large as we band together to protect and defend the rights and civil liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution for everyone in this country,” Michele said in a statement.

Celebrities’ support of the ACLU has increased since Donald Trump became president. In fact, the organization’s membership has doubled in size after the ex-Celebrity Apprentice host’s controversial Muslim ban, and his decision to bar transgender individuals from serving in the military.

And it’s not just Hollywood who is standing with the ACLU. The fashion community is, too. According to Refinery 29, more than 50 designers worked with the organization to raise awareness for their cause during New York Fashion Week.
