Love on the Spectrum‘s heartfelt dating stories have been brought to life by the show’s cocreator, producer and director Cian O’Clery. In Touch takes a deep dive into the creative mind behind the Netflix hit.

Who Is Cian O’Clery?

Cian is an Emmy-award winning TV producer who hails from Australia. He cocreated Love on the Spectrum‘s original Australian version before making an American version of the dating docuseries for Netflix.

Cian O’Clery Has a Lengthy Background in Production

Prior to Love on the Spectrum, Cian has worked as a producer on Wife Swap Australia, was a story producer on the Australian versions of The Mole and Farmer Wants a Wife and directed episodes of the National Geographic Channel’s Life on the Edge.

Love on the Spectrum is Cian’s fifth documentary series with the Australian production company Northern Pictures.

How Did Cian O’Clery Come Up With the Idea for ‘Love on the Spectrum’?

“I made a couple of series in Australia with [Love on the Spectrum coexecutive producer] Karina Holden that were about people with disabilities looking for work. During that process, we met lots and lots of people on the spectrum. Not only did we get to know the people we were filming really well, but we also spoke to hundreds and hundreds of people on the spectrum about their lives and what was important to them,” Cian told Netflix’s Tudum in April 2021.

“The story of people wanting to find love and wanting to date just kept coming up. To us, that was something that wasn’t right. There was obviously a lack of support, and it just felt like a really interesting area to shine a light on,” he continued.

Cian went on to explain, “The other thing that we noticed was the diversity of the spectrum and just how different people can be. That’s the most important thing that we can do with this series, to show that huge diversity that people don’t really understand.”

He added, “I should note, as well, it’s really important to acknowledge that not everybody who is on the spectrum needs support in the world of dating and relationships. Everyone’s so different. But a lot of people do, and a lot of people we spoke to did and were really calling out for that.”

Cian O’Clery Wants to Make Sure the ‘Love on the Spectrum’ Stars Are Comfortable and Happy With Their Portrayals

“Sometimes, there are things that we’ll take out that might be really entertaining or really interesting, but we feel doesn’t necessarily represent the person in the best way or in the best light. Hopefully, we’ve managed to tell everyone’s stories in a way that people are happy with,” Cian told Vanity Fair in April 2025. “I mean, the participants themselves are really happy, which is great. They’re the most important critics.”

Cian O’Clery Has Won Multiple Primetime Emmy Awards for ‘Love on the Spectrum’

Cian took home his first Emmy Award in 2022 following season 1 of Love on the Spectrum airing on Netflix. He won for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. While the show lost in the same category in 2024 despite a nomination, Cian still took home trophies for Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program and Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program for LOTS season 2.

Cian O’Clery Shared Hopes for Potential ‘Love on the Spectrum’ Season 4

As of May 7, 2025, Netflix had yet to announce that Love on the Spectrum had been picked up for a fourth season, despite season 3 premiering on April 2, 2025.

“Hopefully, there’s another season. There’s no official green light at this point, but we believe there’s plenty of stories to still be told,” Cian told Vanity Fair. “We’d love to keep making more of the series and working with these awesome people who are just a pleasure to film with really.”

What Is Cian O’Clery’s Next Big Goal for ‘Love on the Spectrum’?

“We’re just crossing our fingers for the first U.S. Love on the Spectrum wedding,” Cian gushed to Vanity Fair. “Who knows when that’ll happen or who it’ll be, but it’s bound to happen one day, right?”
