Maddie Brush (née Brown) came to national attention on the TCL reality show Sister Wives as one of polygamist Kody Brown’s 18 children. Her mother, Janelle Brown, was once one of Kody’s four concurrent wives.

While polygamy is illegal in all 50 states, Kody was only ever technically married to one of his wives at a time and “spiritually” married to the other three. The family belongs to the Apostolic United Brethren (AUB) — which is a sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS), or the Mormon religion that allows followers to practice polygamy. 

However, Maddie has different religious views than those of her controversial father.

While Maddie was raised according to her parents’ religion, she recently commented on her current beliefs with husband, Caleb Brush. 

She answered, “We are non-denominational Christians,” in response to a fan question: “How would you describe your faith/religion these days?”

What Does Dad Kody Brown Have to Say About Maddie Brown’s Religion?

While Kody is a staunch believer that “Love should be multiplied, not divided,” as evidenced by his faith, which he has said gave him a “divine calling” toward polygamy, he isn’t dogmatic with his children.

“I think the majority of them are oriented towards Christianity,” he told TLC. “I wanted to advocate faith for my children, but I’ve really set it in their place to make their choices about God and religion.”

“Nope!” Maddy gave her curt answer during an Instagram Live Q&A in response to a fan that asked if she would “ever choose to have a plural family?”

“Just me and this man and THAT IS IT,” she replied, adding a photo of her giving husband Caleb a kiss.

Maddy and her husband Caleb have been married since 2016. The couple have three children already – Axel, Evie, and Josephine – and are currently expecting their fourth. 

Her mother, Janelle, is supportive of Maddy and her husband, commenting “Pretty dang excited,” on their pregnancy announcement post.

What Is Maddie Brown’s Relationship Like With Her Father Kody Brown?

Maddie is currently estranged from her father, Kody. Her mother, Janelle, left the salesman and reality star in December 2022 after 19 years of their spiritual union. 

Speaking with her mother about Janelle’s plans to move away from the family’s home in Flagstaff, Arizona, Maddie told her, “I do think it’s smart for you to move away.”

Maddie has said she has “no contact” with her dad, among some other members of their large family. “It’s because of stuff that has happened,” Maddie shared on the Monday, November 11, episode of her “The Authentic Society” podcast. She added that Kody “doesn’t have any respect for boundaries, and you have to play by his rules, and I just don’t care to do that.”

“My dad would get very angry when I would — I’m a straight shooter. You ask me a question, I’m going to tell you what I think. And he would get very angry when I would be like, ‘I don’t know why you’re surprised here,’” she said. “And so that was one of the reasons that I went no contact because it was like, he didn’t like a mirror being held up.”
