We can’t not obsess over doomed relationships: Romeo and Juliet, Jack and Rose, Buffy and Angel, Amber Portwood and Matt Baier. Yeah, so maybe that last relationship didn’t exactly have Teen Mom fans swooning, but a lot of devotees of the MTV reality franchise wanna know exactly what happened between these exes.

The consensus is that it’s Matt’s fault, and the 46-year-old even agrees. “I’m trying to do a lot of work on myself because I realize now the downfall of our relationship was my fault,” he told E! News in August. “When you’re thrust into the spotlight like that, it can affect you. My mistake was taking our relationship for granted.”

The couple seemed to be on thin ice by 2016, especially after news broke that February that Matt owed child support to multiple other women for several secret biological children, as People reported. (He denied those rumors to In Touch.) Within months, Amber was facing a scandal herself, with gossip flying that she had been physically abusive with her fiancé. (She denied those rumors, and she has even accused him of violence.) Also, it didn’t help that he failed a polygraph question about making sexual advances toward another woman.

Amber and Matt headed to Marriage Boot Camp in 2017 to get their relationship sorted out before their wedding that October, but they broke up midway through the filming process. “We went there to help our relationship or whatever was left of it, and it didn’t go well because he lied about s–t, so I broke up with him one night,” she told Teen Mom OG producers of their Marriage Boot Camp experience. (She also called Matt “weak.”)

After he was dumped, Matt didn’t go to the home he and Amber shared in Indianapolis, IN. He headed to Vegas — where, coincidentally or not, he had met alleged mistress Tiffany Bassett. “Ultimately, my hope was to get a place where Amber could come visit me and we could work on our issues,” he told E! News. “Obviously that didn’t happen.”

Instead, he started gambling. “I’ve been making a living through my winnings,” he revealed. “That said, I’m not really enjoying it. This isn’t the life I want to live.”

As of August, he was still hoping for a second chance with the 27-year-old Teen Mom star. “If I got a do-over,” he said, “I would do everything differently. I should have listened to her more … I’ll hold out hope for a reconciliation. But if nothing else, I hope we can stay friends.”

That seems doubtful now. Amber moved on with Andrew Glennon, and Matt married girlfriend Jennifer Conlon in November. Plus, if you believe Farrah Abraham, Matt “never really liked Amber.” Well, bygones, right?
