So tragic. Singer Christina Grimmie, a former contestant on The Voice, is dead at 22 after a man she didn't know shot her at close range at an Orlando concert late Friday, June 10.

The rising star — the opening act for the band Before You Exit — was signing autographs after her performance when the gunman approached her and opened fire about 10:30 p.m., said Orlando police spokeswoman Wanda Miglio in a press conference.

Her brother Mark Grimmie immediately tackled the assailant, who was wielding two guns and then shot and killed himself. Police on Saturday, June 11 said he was a 21-year-old male from another city in Florida, declining to say where or give his name. There was no indication that the two knew each other at all.

Christina — from Marlton, NJ — came in third during season six of the NBC singing contest starring Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.

"We are heartbroken," the show tweeted in an official statement.

Adam expressed sadness and confusion on Instagram after hearing about the shooting and before it was announced that Christina had died.
