Suri Cruise Is Old Enough to Understand Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ Divorce
She’s getting older and wiser! Suri Cruise turned 12 years old this month, and that marks the fifth birthday that she celebrated without her father, Tom Cruise. Little Suri has been primarily raised by her mom Katie Holmes ever since her parents divorced in 2012 and now that the preteen isn’t a little girl anymore, she’s really come to terms with her family’s dynamic after her parents’ split.
“She’s obviously old enough to understand what divorce is, and has to have accepted the fact that she’s in a single-parent family,” an insider revealed to In Touch. While it’s heartbreaking that Tom has not been a part of Suri’s life for five years, that wasn’t always the case. Tom was a doting daddy ever since he welcomed his first child with Katie, and he would gush about his little girl any chance he got.
It seemed like he was willing to co-parent with his ex-wife even after their divorce though, and just weeks after their divorce was finalized in July 2012, Tom was seen with Suri on a sweet daddy-daughter trip to Disney World. But that would sadly be one of the last times he would be seen with Suri, and he hasn’t been spotted with his daughter since September 2013.
It’s unclear why Tom would drop out of Suri’s life, but it’s been long speculated that his Scientology religion might have something to do with it. But thankfully, Suri always seems perfectly happy wheneve she’s spotted out in public and she looks like she’s being well-taken care of by her mom — and even though Katie is a single, working mom, she makes sure to dote on Suri and spend a lot of quality mother-daughter time to make up for the fact that her father isn’t around. “Tom’s been out of their lives for so long, she and Katie have moved on to a life without Daddy,” an insider said.
