Harry Potter alum Rupert Grint made headlines in November 2024 after a British judge ruled that he owed millions of dollars in taxes tied to his residuals from the fantasy film series. However, the actor’s tax bill pales in comparison to the huge net worth he’s amassed from starring in the Harry Potter franchise and his work beyond the movies.
What Is Rupert Grint’s Net Worth?
Rupert has an estimated net worth of $50 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
How Does Rupert Grint Earn Money?
Rupert is most famously known for his role as Ron Weasley in all eight Harry Potter films. The first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001, marked the actor’s debut screen performance and his big break. He went on to receive nominations for and win multiple awards for his portrayal of Ron, including the Satellite Award for Outstanding New Talent and the Young Artist Award for Most Promising Young Newcomer.
Rupert began working outside of the Harry Potter franchise in 2002, with roles in Thunderpants, Driving Lessons (2006) and Wild Target (2010). After the Harry Potter film series ended in 2011, the U.K. native continued to act in other movies, including Into the White (2012), Charlie Countryman (2013), CBGB (2013), Moonwalkers (2015) and Knock at the Cabin (2023).
Rupert also starred in the psychological horror series Servant from 2019 to 2023, among other television projects. He also served as executive producer and starred in the series Sick Note in 2017.
The actor made his stage debut in 2013 with the play Mojo at the Harold Pinter Theatre. He went on to make his Broadway debut as Frank Finger in It’s Only a Play at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in 2014.

How Much Did Rupert Grint Get Paid for ‘Harry Potter’?
Rupert reportedly earned $4 million for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2007, according to Celebrity Net Worth. He later reportedly earned a combined $30 million for both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. He earned “at least $70 million from Harry Potter base salaries alone” after adjusting for inflation, the outlet reported.
Rupert Grint Owes $2.3 Million in Taxes
Rupert lost a case against British tax authorities and was ordered to pay £1.8 million (about $2.3 million) to His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the Associated Press reported on November 30, 2024. The U.K. tax agency alleged that Rupert had wrongly classified £4.5 million in residuals from the Harry Potter movies — meaning money earned from DVD sales, TV syndication, streaming rights and other sources — as a capital asset instead of income, according to the outlet. Income is subject to a higher tax rate.
HMRC started investigating Rupert’s 2012 tax return in 2019, according to AP. They alleged that he was attempting to use a financial loophole to lower his tax payments.
Rupert’s lawyers appealed, but Judge Harriet Morgan ultimately ruled against the actor, stating that the money “derived substantially the whole of its value from the activities of Mr. Grint” and “is taxable as income,” AP reported.
