New York rapper Destiny Frasqueri a.k.a Princess Nokia has accused pop star Ariana Grande of ripping off her style. In a video posted to social media, Nokia plays a snippet of Ariana’s hot new single “7 Rings” and then her own song “Mine” from her mixtape 1992 to show their similarities.

“Does that sound familiar to you? ’Cause that sound really familiar to me,” Nokia, 26, said while drawing comparisons to her own 2017 release. “Ain’t that the lil song I made about brown women and their hair? Hmmm… sounds about white.” The rapper also re-tweeted a fan’s post that claimed 25-year-old Ariana’s “new album literally plagiarizes flows, words, bars from Nokia.” Princess Nokia has now sparked a debate about the lyrical similarities of her and Ariana’s singles.

“I legit thought the exact same thing when I heard the song without even seeing this video,” one fan wrote in the comment section of Princess Nokia’s post on Instagram. “I knew it sounds familiar,” another chimed in. However, several others were on the complete opposite side of the fence. “Bro what? First of all it doesn’t sound the same,” a third argued after hearing both singles back to back, while another agreed fully writing, “Sounds nothing like it. But you tried it sis.”

Ariana just dropped her highly anticipated single on January 18, and she also released a music video to accompany it. Singer Tayla Parx, who appeared in the video and is one of Ariana’s closest friends, shared a gif of Kris Jenner enjoying the rich life on Twitter reading, “Me walking around after listening to 7 Rings” and reposted it with the message, “literally all of us after writing it.” Princess Nokia has tagged Ariana in her post, so we’ll see what comes of all this!
