Throughout the '90s, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were America's most popular set of twins. But over the past decade, fans have started to wonder what happened to them. The twins have increasingly become more reclusive, only coming out of hiding for the occasional walk down the red carpet or to support their fashion brand, The Row. One of those times was this past month when the famous sisters showed up to the 2018 Met Gala. Immediately, fans had a lot of questions. For one, people wanted to know why their faces looked different, and two, they were curious on why the former child stars had been so private lately.

Ever since the twins retired from acting when they were 18, their world has been a bit of a mystery — which is why we decided to poke through their private bubble and answer the questions that have followed the Full House stars for years. Below, every single question you've ever had about the twins, answered.

How come the Olsen twins don't act anymore?

The twins retired from acting when they were 18. Their last major film together was 2004's New York Minute.

"Listen, I used to be in the entertainment industry," Ashley said in 2009. "I decided at 18 that I don't really want to do this anymore. I wanted to explore other things, and with that came The Row."

However, Mary-Kate has done a little acting throughout the years, appearing in Weeds in 2007 and the film Beastly in 2011.

Did the Olsen twins get plastic surgery?

Neither Mary-Kate nor Ashley have spoken out about plastic surgery, but fans have been speculating that the twins have gone under the knife for years. However, according to Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Rian Maercks, who has not treated the twins, he thinks their different appearance is due to smoking, not surgery.

"I would say that technically the majority of the changes we see could be due to accelerated aging associated with nicotine products, tobacco, or other environmental factors, as [Mary-Kate] is a known smoker," he told Life & Style.

Are the Olsen twins on drugs?

The relationship between the twins and drugs is spotty. Of course, there have been numerous reports and rumors about alleged drugs from unverified sources, but none of the women have ever spoken out or confirmed it. Below is a brief timeline of their alleged drug use:

  • In 2005, Ashley sued The National Enquirer over a story that claimed she was in the middle of a drug scandal.
  • A former bodyguard told The National Enquirer in 2008 that he once saw Mary-Kate take a hit off a joint and get drunk at clubs. "Yeah, we do go to parties," they said about their partying lifestyle at the time. "Listen, we’re not perfect."
  • A 2008 exposé described Mary-Kate as an all-night partier who would often get "pretty wild" on some nights.
  • Mary-Kate's involvement with the death of Heath Ledger, who died of an accidental overdose of prescription pills in 2008, had people questioning if she had something to do with it. However, her lawyer said she had "nothing to do" with Heath's drugs.

How come the Olsen twins aren't on Fuller House?

Netflix's new Full House revamp, Fuller House debuted in 2016, but fans were upset when they realized Michelle Tanner wouldn't be making an appearance.

"You'd have to ask them," John Stamos told Howard Stern in 2016 about why the Olsens declined to appear on the show. "They seemed…they were very, very sweet. They seemed very into it. They just were afraid of acting. They don't consider themselves actresses. I said maybe you guys will just be in New York and we'll do a phone call or something and they were like, 'Let us think about it,' and it just wasn't for them so."

Did Mary-Kate have an eating disorder?

Yes, in 2004 she checked into an undisclosed facility for anorexia after several months of public scrutiny of her weight loss. "This is a challenge that Mary-Kate has made a decision to face,” her rep Michael Pagnotta said at the time. “This is a challenge she will meet.”

Did the Olsen twins like being famous?

Neither of them have outright said they despised it, but they've both been candid with explaining that fame wasn't all rainbows and fun.

"I look at old photos of me, and I don't feel connected to them at all," Mary-Kate told Marie Claire in 2010. "I would never wish my upbringing on anyone… [We were] little monkey performers."

However, Ashley's opinion on fame has been less harsh.

“I am so proud of what we did," she said in 2011. "We made kids smile every day. But we had done the most we could do.”

How much money do they have?

The twins have an estimated worth of $1 billion thanks to their successful fashion brands, The Row and Elizabeth and James, and the royalties they continue to receive from Full House reruns.

The petite star, who's only 5-foot 1-inch, has explained in the past that she's simply cold all the time.

"For me it was so cold, like the wind chill," she told Style.com. "How can you not put on 20 things when you're going from Los Angeles to walking through the snow?"

Are the Olsen twins married?

Ashley isn't, but Mary-Kate is. She married French banker Olivier Sarkozy, who's 17 years her senior, in a top-secret ceremony in 2015.

She opened up about her new life as a housewife in 2017.

“I have a husband, two stepkids and a life; I have to go home and cook dinner," she told The Edit. "I ride horses on the weekends. You find the thing that helps you relax and if you don’t have it, you have to look for it. Or you get burned out and then you’re not productive.”

Why are the Olsen twins so private?

“They came to New York and wanted to go to college,” their publicist Michael Pagnotta said. “They’d been kind of hamster-wheeling their lives, and through the first year of college, when they got to NYU, they actually met people who had a different take on the world. They maybe got a different sense of what their future might be. And maybe it wouldn’t necessarily be in acting.”
