MTV’s Young and Pregnant star Brianna Jaramillo is opening up about the realities of raising a son with a disability and being in an on-again-off-again relationship with her transgender boyfriend, Danae. In a recent interview, the 18-year-old said she was shocked to find out her now six-month-old son Braeson would be born without a forearm and a hand, but refused to be anything but positive.

“It was definitely hard hearing about it and realizing he might grow up and realize that he’s different from everybody else,” she told People. “That was definitely hard. But, talking to my doctor about it — it made it a lot easier to handle it, and I realized it wouldn’t slow him down.”

“He’s going to adjust to living with it because he was born with it. It’s not like he had an arm and lost it,” she added. “He’s going to learn to do everything that we do but without it.”

Although Brianna doesn’t specify the name of her son’s condition, it could be assumed that it’s a congenital hand anomaly. According to About Kids Health, it’s described as a “hand or arm deformity that is present at birth. The unborn baby develops the anomaly early during pregnancy,” which can include bones in the hand or arm that are too short or missing. A congenial hand anomaly is rare and not caused by something the mother did or did not do during pregnancy.

Danae, who is not Braeson’s biological father, helped her as she came to grips with her son’s disability. (The two were separated when the teenager became pregnant by an old friend). Despite the pregnancy, Danae vowed to love and raise Brianna’s son as his own. “Me being trans, I can show him there is so much more to this world,” he said during the show’s premiere.

Both he and Brianna seem committed to LGBTQ equality, and Brianna said she would fully accept her son if he were to come out. “I wouldn’t be mad or upset,” she told the mag. “Honestly, I would be happy if he came home with a girlfriend or boyfriend, I would be happy because I want him to be who he is at the end of the day.”
