He’s baaaack! As hard as it is to admit, the final season of The Mindy Project will be airing soon on Hulu — and as sad as that makes us, there’s some very good news accompanying the sad news: Chris Messina will be back reprising his role as Danny Castellano! Mindy Kaling shared the exciting news on Instagram!
The fifth season of The Mindy Project was a rocky one for Danny and Mindy. Though the two welcomed a child together, things didn’t exactly work out for the characters — and Chris was demoted to “recurring guest star,” though he was rarely seen in the show’s penultimate season. When he left after the show’s fourth season, the hunky actor said he was always interested in returning.
“I love those guys, and I would love to come back,” Chris told Variety when he was asked if he would return to the small screen for the show’s last season. “It’s an amazing group of people. I love Mindy. I love that character that she wrote for me. That whole experience was like a master class of comedy, watching all of those actors. The writers were super gifted. I would love to come back.”
Fans who have closely been following Mindy’s work on The Mindy Project may not be surprised to see Danny’s return — as Mindy previously told fans he’d be back, though she admitted they weren’t “super interested” in “tying everything up in a bow.” She did, however, tell fans that fans would get to see where the two stand with each other — adding that they’re both married to other people now, which is — in the real Mindy’s words — “fun and delicious.”
We can’t wait to see how this all plays out! The final season of The Mindy Project debuts on Hulu on Sept. 12!
