Are criminals born or are they formed? America's newest crime series, Mindhunter, attempts to tackle that question by sending FBI agents to interview the country's worst serial killers. The show is currently streaming on Netflix and is creating a lot of buzz among fans. When asked about America's obsession with crime, producer David Fincher responded, "We’re very quick to judge. That should be looked at as a human failing. But I think at its best, people’s interest in true crime is people’s interest in trying to understand why we behave the way that we do." What is Mindhunter about?

The Netflix original series describes itself as "In the late 1970s two FBI agents expand criminal science by delving into the psychology of murder and getting uneasily close to all-too-real monsters." The show follows Holden Ford (played by Glee's Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (played by Holt McCallany) as they interview serial killers. Holt's character asks on the show, "How do we get ahead of crazy if we don't know how crazy thinks?" Good question…

Is Mindhunter based on a true story?

Yes, as frightening as that is to hear. The show — produced by David Fincher and Charlize Theron — is based on the true crime book, Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit. The three main characters (Special Agents Ford, Tench, and Dr. Ann Wolbert Burgess) on the show are based on real people, although some creative liberties were taken.

Also, some of the serial killers depicted onscreen are based on real murderers. Among them are Dennis Rader (aka the BTK Killer), Edmund Emil Kemper III (aka the Co-ed Killer), and Jerry Brudos (aka the Shoe Fetish Slayer).

Is Mindhunter coming back for Season 2?

The show was renewed for a second season before the first season even premiered. "Next year we're looking at the Atlanta child murders." David Fincher said in a Billboard interview. The murders took place between 1979 and 1981 killing 28 African-American people (from children up to adults).

How are the reviews for Mindhunter?

The show has received mainly positive reviews from critics. Vanity Fair writer Richard Lawson wrote, "Mindhunter is one of Netflix’s most artful, substantial series… It indulges a perhaps uniquely American fascination while also attempting to explain it, rescuing the series from simply being yet another leering bit of murder exploitation. Perhaps when Mindhunter’s run has ended, we’ll have some better conception of why we watch all the brutal stuff that we do. Better yet, maybe we’ll be cured of the compulsion."

When does Mindhunter Season 2 come out?

Since the first season premiered in October, we're not sure when the second season will be released yet. According to SpoilerTV, Season 2 started production in May and will wrap by the end of 2017. Because the show aired its first season in October, it's safe to plan that the second season will air in October 2018 — just in time for Halloween!
