She’s bringing the visuals into the mix. Singer Miley Cyrus just released the music video for her brand new track, “Slide Away,” about her breakup with husband Liam Hemsworth. The 26-year-old dropped the new 4-minute clip, directed by Alexandre Moors, on September 6 — and it seems like she really wants to highlight her partying past.
The video seems to chronicle a big house party and the messy aftermath, where Miley sings in a pool that it’s “time to let it go.” Later in the video, she walks through the party and takes in the sleeping and passed out bodies around her. It looks as though she’s reflecting on her old ways … and deciding to step away from a possible relapse into those habits.
In the aftermath of the news of their split, there have been reports that Liam, 29, was the heavy partier in the relationship as of late and that those tendencies put a big strain on his relationship with the pop star, with whom he’s been in an on-again, off-again romance for 10 years. That would be in line with Miley’s video portrayal, though no one has confirmed any alleged drug use or partying habits.
She also repeats the phrase “go back to the ocean” in the track, a hint which might also corroborate with reports that said Liam spent his days surfing and nights raging — though he is also Australian and a known surfing lover, so we’ll give him that for sure.
Miley and Liam met on the set of their film The Last Song back in 2009 and fell for each other pretty hard and quickly. Though their 10-year love wasn’t without its hiccups (and some breakups here and there), it was clear the couple really loved one another throughout the years. By Christmas Eve 2018, the duo had secretly tied the knot in a quiet ceremony in Miley’s hometown of Nashville.
But on August 10, Miley was spotted kissing The Hills star Kaitlynn Carter during a girls’ trip to Italy … and that was the beginning of the end for the longtime couple. The song — and subsequent music vid — seems to be the pop star’s “goodbye” to an old chapter of her life, romantically and personally.
