Michelle Duggar Acts Weird at Weddings, and Not Because She’s “Losing Another Daughter”

Jessa looks like a personified crescent moon in that picture, doesn't she?

Anyway, Jim Bob did a lot to appease Michelle, re "This reminds me of 30 years ago, seeing your mom, you just…you're just so beautiful," Jim Bob says. I tell you what, I can't believe it's the day we've talked about for years."

After Jim Bob gives a speech, Michelle hands over some tissues and squeaks a bunch of disingenuous remarks about how we don't want her to cry and ruin her makeup BUT I THINK THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT, MICHELLE. She is showboating in this scene in such an artificial way, it's insane. Then Jim Bob calls for a picture where Michelle lightly edges herself more and more into the shot. He shoots more compliments at his wife, who is about to die from lack of spotlight. "You and Jessa look like twins," he says. "You both are raving beauties. You look like sisters."

Pay attention to this format, because now it's becoming a pattern.

That's not all, though! During pictures and all that jazz, Ben and Jessa were encouraged to kiss…and apparently, that's Michelle and Jim Bob's cue to start playing tonsil hockey as well. This family, I swear.

Michelle at Jill's Wedding

So if you can remember, this is when Michelle started the Duggar wedding dress tradition. Basically when a Duggar daughter gets married, Michelle gives them a piece of her (and, before that, Grandma Duggar's) wedding dress to incorporate in their look. Out of context, it's a sentimental and sweet way to carry on the women you love most. In context, Michelle is NOT letting her daughters forget that she and Grandma Duggar are the OGs.

Then when it's time for Jill to reveal the dress to her dad, he notices Michelle needs some love and is all, "There's my bride right there, 30 years," he says, with a smooch. "Michelle, I'm having a flashback of just 30 years ago, this was you, I turned around and there you were at the end of the aisle, started walking down there and your dad gave you away to me." Jim Bob is grinning broadly, excited about this new business transaction, and Michelle glows for a brief moment as she remembers the day she was the star instead of Jilly Muffin.

Michelle goes on to look sort of Joker-faced throughout the day, most likely jealous of Jill's attention and all the affection Papa Jim was giving his daughter and not well, Michelle. Proof is in this scene where it looks like Jill has been practicing her Duggar love stare already…

Michelle at Jinger's Wedding

She looks overjoyed.

"Yes there's going to be some stressful, crazy moments to pull this all together," Michelle says, bug-eyed early in the episode. "But really, at the end of the day, I want it to be about relationships, and connecting, making sweet memories and having this time to say 'We love you Jinger and Jeremy.'" So I don't know, this could be nitpicking again, but I think it says a lot that she says "relationships" as a plural before mentioning Jinger and Jeremy. Michelle and Jim Bob had a relationship first, guys. They are the Adam and Eve of this pickle-worshipping family.

Sure enough, Michelle invites herself to Jinger's big wedding dress reveal to Jim Bob and Michelle's all, "Should we pray?" to get attention on her front and center. Sigh.

OH, AND JOSIE GETTING CROWNED, CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT? There's a really weird scene where Michelle says that Josie's former nurse is going to give her a crown of lights as part of her…I don't know, flower girl initiation. Again, on a surface level, this is a harmless move. But when you do a double take, it's kind of like…why? It's not Josie's day, nor do I think she cares that the woman who once changed her diapers ('cause it sure wasn't Michelle) is stopping by to say "Hey." No, I genuinely think this was a weird ploy for Michelle to squeeze just a liiiiittle bit more screentime into the episode.

Maybe that's a controversial grievance, or maybe I'm overreacting. After all, this doesn't ruin Jing's special day or anything. I'm just saying that if it was my wedding, I would've snapped with a full Jughead Jones "You did this for you" meltdown.

Michelle at Joy-Anna's Wedding

"Oooooh, you girls are such good helpers!" Michelle condescendingly coos as she unnecessarily aids the flower girls with putting on Joy's veil. Then it's time for Jim Bob to see his little girl in her wedding dress and, you guessed it, as he lays on the praise and they both get emotional, Michelle has to get involved. In fact, Michelle does basically a _ reenactment_ of her scene at Jessa's wedding. "You don't want to mess up your makeup, she just got her makeup done," she squeals. "Oooh, ooh!" Stop, please and thanks.

Jim Bob, sensing that Michelle's reached her boiling point, asks for a quick picture. Every time. Every time.

It's cool, Jim Bob reveals after giving away five children it never gets easier, Austin's a great guy, "and so we're both so excited for both of them."
