Basketball legend Michael Jordan has just opened his fourth free health clinic for uninsured families in his home state of North Carolina – as friends and showbiz peers praise him for being one of the kindest celebrities of his entire generation, an insider exclusively tells In Touch.

“He has a vision to expand across the country and would love to see other celebrities follow his lead,” the source explains. “He wants to leave a lasting mark with his legacy that’s about more than just basketball.”

“Michael is not doing this for publicity or some sort of tax break, this is something he genuinely cares about,” the insider notes. “He has seen firsthand how hard it is for underprivileged communities to get access to good medical care, and he’s vowed to do what he can to help.”

The source adds that the retired six-time NBA champion, 62, who has an estimated net worth of around $3.5 billion, according to Forbes, has “more money than he could spend in 10 lifetimes.” They say it “gives him a lot of happiness to be able to put his wealth to good use.”

Michael Jordan is passionate about providing free health care to those in need.

Not one to sit idly by, Michael is not only writing the checks for his major projects, he’s also “very hands on in creating these clinics,” the source reveals.

“He’s personally involved in making sure these clinics are staffed with the best doctors, that they’re in locations where they’re needed most, and that families don’t have to jump through hoops to get help,” shares the source.

He opened his latest Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic in Wilmington, North Carolina, in partnership with Novant Health on February 19, 2025. The North Carolina Medical Society reported that the free clinic operates on weekdays, and boasts 7,300 square feet and 12 patient rooms.

“This cause is personal to me,” Michael said in a statement at the time, reflecting on his decision to open a second free clinic in the area where he grew up.

Michael Jordan is a former professional basketball player.

The sports star’s family moved from Brooklyn, New York, to Wilmington in 1968 and he went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981, where he accepted a full basketball scholarship.

“It’s rewarding to see that in less than a year, the first Wilmington clinic has already had a substantial effect on the health and wellness of individuals and families in my hometown,” he continued. “Returning to Wilmington last year to mark the opening of our first clinic was incredibly moving, and it reinforced the importance that I put on having quality health care available in the community.”

Ernie Bovio, who serves as the President of Novant Health Coastal Region, said: “We are immensely grateful to Michael Jordan for his vision and generosity in bringing these two clinics to life in our community. Through his philanthropic partnership, the new clinic on Greenfield Street last year saw nearly 1,800 patients in its first nine months.”

Prior to founding the second Wilmington location, the former athlete’s first two clinics were opened in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2019 and 2020, according to Newsweek.
