Remember Matt Lauer‘s infamously awkward 2005 interview with Tom Cruise? We do too — even though it’s already been 13 years since it aired!

During a previous appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live!, the former Today host revealed how he felt after the two argued over Scientology, psychiatry, and prescription drugs. “Can I just say before we do this, I like Tom Cruise,” Matt stated, before adding, “We have a good relationship, we have a good friendship. It was just one little moment.”

However, in that moment, he nearly lost his cool! “I was thinking, ‘Can I take him in a wrestling match? Could I tackle him on the set?’” Matt recalled.

Tom, 55, sat down for an interview on the hit morning show over a decade ago to promote his film, War of Worlds — but the conversation quickly headed downhill when Tom said to Matt, “You don’t know the history of psychiatry. I do.”

Years later, Matt even built up the courage to ask Tom’s ex-wife Katie Holmes about the incident. When she was promoting her 2016 film Touched by Fire, Matt commented, “[The movie] asks the question: Is it beneficial to treat these people with drugs? You and I both remember a heated discussion I got into on that subject here in this studio. How do you think the movie comes down on that?” Somehow, the actress was able to dodge the super awkward question about her former husband!

Tom and Matt have since made up — and the now-fired anchor admitted he learned a valuable lesson from his uncomfortable interaction with the Hollywood star. “Even the bad interviews I think you learn from. They make you better,” he said. “If you have a bad experience on the air, you don’t think you’ve done your job or you have an embarrassing moment. I guarantee you’ll work harder the next time not to let it happen again.”
