A bittersweet night. Luke Perry’s final performance debuted months after his unexpected death. Many people came out to honor the late actor, but the most sentimental tribute was from his daughter.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood premiered on Monday, July 22. Although the event was crawling with stars, a somber note filled the air. This was the last movie Luke had filmed before his passing. His daughter, Sophie Perry, honored him in a touching Instagram post where she shared how excited her father was to be a part of the film.

Under an image of her father in character, the 19-year-old wrote, “My dad has never been more excited in his life than he was to be part of this. He was like a kid faced with a banana split the size of his head, or a trip to Disneyland, or I don’t even know what.” Sophie continued to say that though she wishes her father could have been here to perform more, she’s happy this was his final project. “And while I wish so greatly that my dad had a million more roles, and projects, and moments of childlike excitement… I am so proud and thankful that this got to be his last. He was proud. He is proud.”

Luke’s son, Jack Perry, also posted to social media to commemorate his father. In a video of him sitting next to a billboard of the late actor, the professional wrestler, 22, wrote, “A stud in life, and forever after. The best of the best. Love you forever.”

Despite the hardship of seeing her father on the big screen one last time, Sophie is still thrilled for fans to see his work: “Grab your popcorn, extra butter, and a whole lot of napkins, I’m sure I won’t be the only one sobbing ❤️ and thank you to everyone who worked on this movie for making this dream possible.”

The late actor died March 4, 2019, after suffering a massive stroke at age 52. Luke was best known for his role as Dylan McKay on the ’90s hit TV show Beverly Hills, 90210, but his most recent TV role was Fred Andrews on Riverdale. The CW aired the last episode he filmed before his passing back in April.
