John Travolta Hilariously Mistakes ‘Drag Race’ Alum Jade Jolie for Taylor Swift During MTV VMAs
Oops! John Travolta took the stage at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards to present the Video of the Year award to Taylor Swift … or so he thought. The actor seemingly mistook RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Jade Jolie for the pop star at the highly anticipated event on Monday, August 26, and fans can’t get enough of his latest blooper.
Taylor, 29, was about to accept her prize for the track “You Need to Calm Down” when the funny moment took place. “John Travolta just gave the VMA to Drag Race alum Jade Jolie in Taylor Swift drag, FULLY not knowing that it was NOT Taylor Swift, thinking that it was IN FACT Taylor Swift,” GQ editor Brennan Carley posted on Twitter after the ordeal. “I am … reeling.”
“As soon as I saw his name trending, I assumed it was another gaffe and he didn’t disappoint,” one viewer commented in response. “Lol it’s John Travolta … presenter, name destroyer and now the king of mistaking identities,” another wrote, while a third chimed in, “Ya’ll think it’s funny but those lights flashing and everyone in heavy makeup, they looked similar, it’s an easy mistake.”
Of course, fans were recalling the time John, 65, incorrectly pronounced Idina Menzel’s name at the 2014 Oscars especially because he referenced the ordeal. When he opened the envelope to name the winner, the actor handed it over to Queen Latifah, saying, “You’d better do it because I’ll mispronounce s— and f— it up.”
John may find some relief in the fact that Jade actually played Taylor’s lookalike in her music video. “It was even better than I imagined,” Jade previously admitted. “She came in our dressing room while we weren’t scheduled to do anything, she just like came in and hung out with us. She made sure she came over and talked to each one of us individually. It was so awesome.”
After the viral moment tonight, Taylor and Jade were both in great spirits while celebrating their big win. The reality star wrote, “Aaaahhh the most magical night EVER! So proud of my queen @taylorswift13 for snatching Videos for Good & Video Of The Year at the @vmas!”
