Derick has had a very long journey to his new dental makeover. Back in 2015, just one year after marrying Jill, the former Counting On star underwent orthodontic surgery called a palatal expansion. Derick wanted to have braces to fix his teeth, but he was told that he would have to undergo a palate expansion first to make room for his teeth to be able to shift once the braces were on.

The palatal expansion would widen the upper jaw, which means the surgeon would have to fracture and cut and cutting bones in the patient’s mouth. Then, they would place an insert at the roof of the mouth that would help reconfigure the shape and space over time. The procedure is usually done to patients under 16 years of age when the bones are easier to manipulate. But when the palatal expansion is done in adults, their skull bones are more fully grown which makes the procedure a little more difficult.

Shortly after Derick underwent his procedure, fans noticed that the shape of his face had changed, which can be a side effect of the palatal expansion as it’s known to cause a noticeable physical difference in the face. After the procedure, Derick got braces and wore them for four years. Now, we bet he’s very happy to finally have completed his dental transformation.
