Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald's First Date Was Incredibly Awkward

Guys, we need to talk about the extreme awkwardness that was Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald‘s first date. Back in 2014, the couple was just starting to court, which meant it was finally time for them to get to know each other without constantly being surrounded by her siblings. But if you think that means they were about to actually get some time alone, well, wake up, because you clearly just fell asleep and forgot where you were and who you were reading about. This is the Duggar family, which means hand-holding is forbidden until marriage and first dates include your parents.

You read that right. In case you forgot, it was Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar who chaperoned Jessa and her future husband’s first date (though we don’t blame any of her brothers or sisters for trying to get out of courtship chaperoning duty, considering how much they all hate it). In fact, they straight up made it a double date, and things got weird. It wasn’t the first time that the parents of 19 acted bizarrely while their kids were courting, but it was their first time sending a daughter out on a date, which made things about 100 times worse. Then Ben and Michelle got wrangled into the conversation.

Jessa once more tried to make herself invisible while Ben did his best to answer their questions. “You know… It’s better to be maybe a little bit too safe, too strict, than not be safe enough and have regrets later… [I’m] thinking maybe, like, just kind of make a line of, you know, we don’t want to go beyond this…”

Even that wasn’t enough for Jim Bob.

“Where is that line?” he demanded, to which Ben could only stutter, “Well, we’re thinking maybe like… you know, we— we give each other side-hugs like when we, uh, greet each other and stuff… As far as physical contact goes, that’s probably good enough for now.” Also, can we talk about the looks on JB and Michelle’s faces?

The grilling continued on the next mini golf hole, somehow getting even more awkward.

“Are you saying that you’re not gonna hold hands at all? Through your relationship? Or are you just saying that you’re just holding off for a few weeks or what’s your thoughts on that?” he asked while standing with his legs spread, gripping his golf club tightly but never actually swinging it. “I don’t know, I was thinking, uh, maybe as we get deeper into the relationship, maybe, uh, I don’t know…” Ben tried, but Jim Bob just cut him off. “I tell you what, just let me know before you change your plan, okay?”

There was that moment that they humped right in front of their daughter and future in-law.

“Michelle and I LOVE to kiss. We LOVE to hug,” Jim Bob told the cameras in an intervew. “I think it’s important for our kids to understand that Mommy and Daddy love each other.” But just in case Jessa and Ben got in any ideas, he also had to make sure they remember that touching is strictly off-limits for them. “You guys watch this, don’t try this at home until after you’re married!” he said.

And then they did a full makeout, complete with Jim Bob sweeping Michelle off her feet.

He even spun her in a circle, all while Jessa and Ben were awkwardly looking on and trying to laugh it off. “I think he just teases the ones that are in a courtship to just kind of tell them, ‘This is what you’ve got to look forward to!'” Michelle told cameras later. “‘But you can’t do this yet!'”
