For The Sinner, the real question isn't "whodunnit," but "whydunnit." Jessica Biel's new limited series premieres Aug. 2 and has already been called "disturbing" and "unsettling" by critics. Of course, the real question that's on everybody's minds is: "Is it based on a true story?" Jessica plays Cora Tannetti who is not a real person but instead one of the characters from the 1999 novel of the same name by Petra Hammesfahr.

"When I read the book, every step of the way for me was a shock," Jessica, who also executive produced the show admitted. "I just feel like nothing can shock me anymore. Like, I’ve seen it all, there’s nothing that weird, nothing that dark. We all have seen it all, I think in a sense. But every time there was a surprise, it was genuine surprise for me. It just felt incredibly rare to find a piece of material that you didn’t expect every twist and turn of the way."

She continued, "And then it was just genuinely selfish! I just wanted to play that girl and get to be a little nuts." Keep scrolling to learn more about what to expect from The Sinner!

When is The Sinner on?

The Season 1 premiere airs Aug. 2 at 10 p.m. EST on USA Network. The series has a total of eight episodes, making it a limited series for the network.

What is The Sinner about?

The show revolves around a young mother who is overcome by a fit of rage that drives her to commit a startling and extremely public act of violence. The show focuses on the why and the what of the crime rather than the who which makes it different from other crime shows on the air right now.

"This inverted idea, we know the who, the what, the where, but we don’t know the why,” show creator Derek Simonds explained. "That I hadn’t really seen in such a clear way as this story. Instead of looking for the DNA evidence that leads you to the killer or a cat-and-mouse game, it is all about the psyche of the person. Always asking the question: 'What could have triggered her to do this?'"

Where was The Sinner filmed?

To film this show, the cast and crew took a trip down south to Charleston, SC. The crew even included extras from the town to maintain the authenticity of the show.

Will The Sinner be on Hulu?

While some USA shows are available to stream on Hulu, The Sinner will not be one of them — at least not yet. It will be available to stream for DIRECTV NOW customers. Hopefully once the series has aired it will also be added to other streaming services including Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.

It's been too long since we've watched Jessica on our small screens. We can't wait to watch The Sinner — tune in tonight to catch the premiere only on USA.
