Congrats are in order on their little rainbow baby! After suffering a heartbreaking miscarriage earlier this year, 90 Day Fiancé star Paola Mayfield is pregnant and expecting her first child with her husband Russ Mayfield. The couple announced Pao’s pregnancy during a new interview, and they gushed over the exciting news.

“This is the most amazing feeling ever! We can’t believe we are going to be parents — we are already so in love with our baby,” the couple said in an interview with Us Weekly. “We are ready for this new adventure and we know it will bring us closer together. God has blessed us again, and this time, we are going as strong as our baby’s heartbeat!”

This news is especially exciting considering all of the struggles that the couple went through during Season 3 of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After. First, Paola learned the heartbreaking news that her grandmother’s cancer had advanced, so she rushed back to her home country in Colombia with her husband for the first time since she moved to the United States four years ago.

After Pao and Russ visited her grandmother, they spent time with Pao’s parents and it was Pao’s turn to deliver some more heartbreaking news.

“Let me explain,” Pao told her mother. “After four years, we’re thinking about having a baby, but I went to the doctor and it’s not easy for me to have a baby because of the blood type I have.”

Pao explained that since she has a specific blood type, her baby could have lots of complications and the baby could also need a blood transfusion if she were to carry to term. As if that news wasn’t heartbreaking enough, Pao went on to explain that the way she found out that she would have a hard time getting pregnant is when she and Russ suffered a pregnancy loss.

“A couple of weeks before traveling to Colombia, I found out pregnant. And two days after had to go to the emergency room and I had miscarriage,” Pao said in her confessional. “The happiness I felt when I found out I was pregnant was happiness I’ve been looking for my whole life.”

Fans immediately took to social media to share their condolences with Pao and Russ for going through such a difficult experience. “I feel for Paola. Wanting a baby and not being able to have one without tremendous risk is so heavy and heartwrenching!!” one fan wrote on Twitter, while another commented on Instagram, “Sending love, so sorry you had to go through that.”

But after the couple returned to the  United States, Pao visited her OB/GYN and she learned the reason why she had a miscarriage — and thankfully, her doctor gave her some really good news and said she will be able to try again and have children in the future.

Her doctor explained to her that her miscarriage was the result of her blood type. Pao has an O negative blood type, but she is also Rh negative, which is very rare. When women with an O negative/Rh negative blood type get pregnant, the fetus developing inside of them can develop a Rh positive blood type. When that woman’s Rh negative blood mixes with the fetus’ Rh positive blood, the woman’s body often views the Rh positive blood as an allergen, according to the American Pregnancy Associaton. The woman’s body will then develop antibodies and attack the fetus’ blood, resulting in a pregnancy loss. But the good news is that there is a shot of Rh immunoglobulin (RhIg) that Pao can get when she gets pregnant the next time, which will prevent her body from producing antibodies. It seems like everything worked out, because now she and her hubby are expecting baby No. 1!
