There is perhaps no Teen Mom OG relationship as volatile and as turbulent as Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley‘s. The parents of eight-year-old Leah are of course now split and have moved on with their love lives, but Gary, 30, recently revealed to In Touch what it is about his past relationship that he wishes he could change.

“Originally, I really wanted to be with her. Now I’ve moved on,” the father to Leah and two-year-old Emilee, his daughter with wife Kristina Anderson, said.

Things have changed for the now-married star. After a rollercoaster relationship of over five years, Gary and Amber finally called it quits while she was serving time in prison for a 2011 drug charge and violation of probation.

Fans of the MTV series first met a young Amber and Gary when 16 & Pregnant debuted. Since the 2009 premiere date, viewers have watched the formerly engaged couple battle for custody, get into drug-induced arguments, and even engage in domestic violence. Though Gary moved on from his former fiancée while she was in jail —
marrying his now-wife Kristina in 2015 — and Amber has since been engaged to her now-ex Matt Baier and is currently dating Andrew Glennon, the father of two reveals he wished he called it quits on Amber a lot sooner.

“If I were to change anything [about our relationship], maybe myself towards her,” Gary continued. “I would have walked away a lot sooner.”

Now that his up-and-down relationship with Amber is over for good, the papa has other things to worry about: for example, expanding his own family with Kristina. In a recent interview, the patriarch revealed his wife had tubal litigation surgery done. “Actually Kristina had gotten her tubes tied. I would love to have more kids,” he exclusively told In Touch.
