After the actress was criticized for posting a braless selfie on Instagram, she decided to stand up for herself. “’Women HAVE a history that has been systematically suppressed,” the 23-year-old began her first post on Wednesday, August 14, where her nipples were visible through her shirt.

“Our collective spirituality has largely been tainted to fit the needs of men and those in power,” she continued. “This has a profound effect on the self-esteem of girls, and the women they become. This influence can be seen in their life choices, partners and financial security for the rest of their lives. It also has an effect on the way their future partners will view them and ultimately treat them. Our girls deserve better. The time to introduce feminism and woman-centered spirituality to ALL children is now.’”

The blonde beauty continued with another inspiring quote, writing, “‘This is the age of ascendant feminine principle. In such time as these, women are able to look at themselves with new concepts of value and brilliance. However you inhabit and express being woman, embrace yourself in that way today!’”

Some of her followers praised the Disney starlet for being real. One person wrote, “Love this!!” while another echoed, “She’s a role model with or without a bra. Bye!” A third person chimed in, writing, “So inspiring.”

However, some Instagram users were not pleased with Dove’s outfit. “No bra is NOT CLASSY!!!” one follower vented while a second added, “How is wearing a shirt showing your nipples being a role model? I am a parent, my daughter and I have been huge fans of yours, but I don’t see this as inspirational to my daughter’s growth at all.”

The Liv and Maddie alum quickly defended herself, writing, “This is being a role model. This is exactly being a role model.”
