Why Did Migos Break up? Find Out Why Quavo and Takeoff Became a Duo Following Offset’s Departure
Rap group Migos first sparked breakup rumors after Offset and his wife, Cardi B, unfollowed group members, Quavo and the late Takeoff on Instagram in May 2022. In October, Quavo and Takeoff revealed their intentions to take on the group as a duo — but why did Migos break up? Keep reading to find out everything we know.
Migos was formed in 2008, originally under the name Polo Club. All three members were related as Quavo was Takeoff’s uncle and Offset’s cousin.
The four-time BET award-winners made a splash in the hip-hop industry with their 2010 hit “Versace” and collaborated with various artists like Drake, Justin Bieber and Fall Out Boy.
Donald Glover, a.k.a. Childish Gambino, even gave them a stamp of approval at the 2017 Golden Globes awards when he referred to the group as “The Beatles of this generation.”
“I think it was cool, showing people what we’re doing and we’re big and we’re working hard,” Quavo told Thrasher, following the compliment from the Atlanta actor.
“I mean, you can’t take it away from The Beatles, man. I hope we can accomplish what they accomplished. We still have a lot of work to do, but we up there,” he continued.
Migos’ final project together was their June 2021 studio album, Culture III.
Why Did Migos Break Up?
After Offset and Cardi B unfollowed both Takeoff and Quavo on Instagram, fans immediately knew something was up with the group.
“Damn this really the end for Migos? Why else would Offset unfollow Quavo and Takeoff,” a concerned fan tweeted in May.
However, the potential breakup may have stemmed from tensions as Quavo and Takeoff were set to release their new album as a duo, Only Built for Infinity Links, in October 2022.
Following the album’s release, Takeoff and Quavo opened up on why they moved forward as a duo instead of the infamous trio they were known for.
“I just feel like we want to see our career as a duo, you know what I’m saying?” Quavo told the “Big Facts” podcast on October 4. “Because you know, we just came from a loyal family, s—t that’s supposed to stick together. And sometimes, when sh*t don’t work out, it ain’t meant to be.”
Meanwhile, Takeoff focused on leaving the situation in God’s hands. “We don’t know all the answers, you feel me? God knows,” the late rapper explained. “We pray a lot, you know? Whatever ain’t right and however you supposed to see it fit, you put it back together or however you do it, we pray. So only time will tell. We always family now, that ain’t gon’ change.”
Quavo alluded to loyalty being a reason for their third member’s estrangement. “We stand on real deal, real deal loyalty, and sometimes that s—t ain’t displayed. This ain’t got nothing to do with no label, no paperwork, no QC, nothing. This got something to do with the three brothers. And s—t, it is what it is. Right now, we gon’ be the duo ’til time tell.”
On November 1, Takeoff was tragically shot and killed at a bowling alley in Houston, Texas. The rapper was 28 years old.
