RIP. Karl Lagerfeld, best known for being the creative director of world-renowned fashion brands Fendi and Chanel, has passed away at 85 years old in Paris.
Chanel confirmed that Karl was admitted to the hospital on the evening of Monday, February 18, and died during the early hours of Tuesday, February 19. While his exact cause of death is still unknown, Karl had been sick for several weeks. So much so, that he missed a number of fashion shows and events.
The German-born designer began his illustrious career with Chanel in 1983 and has been a staple in the fashion community ever since. In addition to his timeless stylings, Karl’s own signature look — a black suit, big sunglasses and white ponytail — has also become quite iconic in pop culture.
In the wake of Karl’s tragic passing, several clients, friends and fellow fashion designers have come forward to share their words of praise, as well as their best memories of him.
“Rest in peace, Karl. I remember being so scared to interview you and yet you were in fact incredibly witty and generous. Thank you for inviting me to some of the most glamorous experiences of my life, it was an honor to know you. Oh, yeah, and thanks for the dry shampoo tip, will always think of you as I powder my wig,” British model and writer Alexa Chung shared on social media.
Karl’s longtime friend Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace wrote: “Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I. We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Karl’s loved ones during this difficult time. May his designs live on forever.
