Avril Lavigne Dating History: Marriages, Husbands, Exes

Avril Lavigne sure has a thing for fellow musicians. The singer announced on April 7, 2022, that she’s engaged to her Love Sux album collaborator, Mod Sun, and it will be her third trip down the aisle. Avril has also had other romances with high-profile celebrities in between her previous marriages.

The Canadian songstress’ first marriage was to Sum 41 lead singer Deryck Whibley. The fellow Canadians tied the knot in a fairytale July 15, 2006, wedding in Montecito, California, after two years of dating. Avril wore a stunning white Vera Wang gown and veil and carried a bouquet of white roses as she walked down the aisle to a dapper Deryck.

Sadly, their young love wasn’t built to last, as Avril and Deryck separated in September 2009, and she filed for divorce one month later. But their friendship and professional relationship continued. “Everyone’s always surprised that we’re still so close … Deryck is the most talented person I know. He produced, mixed, played guitar and bass [on my new album],” Avril revealed to Rolling Stone in April 2011.

“Getting divorced doesn’t mean drawing a line. No regrets is my mantra and I certainly don’t have any regrets about marrying when and who I did,” she added in the same interview.

Avril went on to date The Hills star Brody Jenner for two years from 2010 to 2012. She didn’t waste any time in getting back in the saddle after their split, announcing in August 2012 that she and Nickelback lead singer, Chad Kroeger, were engaged after less than six months of dating.

“I actually said, before we started dating, ‘I wanna date someone 10 years older than me’ — and he’s exactly 10 years older than me. It’s nice, he’s got it together, he’s mature, he’s done his thing, he’s lived life, he’s been around the world on tour. He’s Canadian, and I’m Canadian, and we have a lot in common,” Avril gushed about Chad during a TV appearance on Chelsea Lately in 2013.

The couple tied the knot in a gothic-themed wedding in Southern France that July, where Avril wore a custom black wedding gown designed by Monique Lhuillier. But just as their whirlwind romance turned into marriage, the pair’s union fell apart after two years and they divorced in 2015.

Like Deryck, Avril remained close to Chad after they split, and he collaborated with his ex on her 2019 album, Head Above Water. “He’s just always been a cheerleader of mine and always been such a huge fan. He’s in my corner, he’s on my side, and he’s always been really great,” she told People magazine that year.

In Avril’s 2022 Instagram announcement that she was engaged to Mod Sun, the “F.U.” singer shared a series of photographs of his Parisian proposal and wrote in the caption, “Oui! Je t’aime pour toujours,” which translates into “Yes! I love you forever.”

In February 2023, Mod Sun opened up about his relationship with the “Complicated” singer amid the release of his new album, God Save the Teen, which features multiple tracks dedicated to his future wife.

“I have found such a partner in this world to go through the chaos that life gives you,” the “Perfectly Imperfect” artist told E! News. “I have found that person. I’m with a real grown woman who has gone through it all 10 times over and she makes me a better person.”

Avril and Deryck Whibley

The Sum 41 lead singer became Avril’s first husband on July 15, 2006. The pair wed after two years of dating and four years after the release of her song “Complicated,” which put Avril on the music map. Despite their gorgeous formal wedding in Montecito, California, a then-24-year-old Avril filed for divorce in October 2009 after three years of marriage.

Avril and Brody Jenner

After her split from Deryck, Avril began a romance with The Hills star that lasted from 2010 through 2012. Brody showed such grand gestures as getting her first initial, “A,” shaved into the side of his head and got Avril’s name prominently tattooed on his inner left forearm, just below his elbow.

Avril and Chad Kroeger

Avril and the Nickelback lead singer kept their romance private until announcing their engagement in 2012. They wed the following year in medieval castle in the south of France. More than 100 guests made it to their luxurious destination wedding. The pair called it quits two years later, announcing their split in September 2015, but have remained friends.

Avril and Mod Sun

The two met and fell in love in 2021 while working on Avril’s album Love Sux. Mod popped the question during a romantic boat ride along Paris’ Seine River with the Eiffel Tower in the background on March 27, 2022. He presented his new fiancé with a stunning heart-shaped diamond ring.
In February 2023, Mod Sun — real name Derek Smith — opened up about how Avril changed his outlook on relationships and life in general, revealing that he is excited to start a family with the eight-time Grammy Award nominee.

“When you realize that success can be defined in growing old and creating a family and passing on these traits that you have and teaching someone that you brought into this world…” he told E! News. “This is the first time in my life that I’ve started to think about defining success in that way. I want to grow old. I want to be a dad and then I want to be a grandpa.”

Noting that he is no longer focused on the number of streams his songs get or concert tickets he sells, the God Save the Teen artist continued, “I want the person that I’m with and I want a child. I don’t know how many children we are going to have. But those are the numbers that matter to me.”
Shortly after making the statement, In Touch confirmed on February 21, 2023, that Avril and Mod and called off their engagement and broke up. It seemed to take him by surprise, as he spoke out about the split exactly one week later in an Instagram post.
“In 1 week my entire life completely changed. I just know there’s a plan for it all. I’ll keep my head up + always listen my heart, even when it feels broken,” the “Flames”singer began in the caption, adding that being on tour was helping ease his pain, calling being with his fans at such a time “an absolute blessing.”

Avril and Tyga

The pair were first photographed having dinner at L.A. hotspot Nobu shortly before Avril’s split from Mod Sun. The twosome then hit up Paris Fashion Week together and seemed to confirm their budding romance when they were photographed sharing a passionate kiss and showing off more PDA at the Mugler x Hunter Schafer party on March 6, 2023.

The two have a dating past connected to the extended Jenner family. Avril dated Brody from 2010 through 2012, and Tyga dated his half-sister Kylie Jenner on and off from 2015 through 2017.

Tyga and Avril’s romance was short lived, though. TMZ reported in June 2023 that they had broken up but remained amicable.
