Karine Staehle (née Martins) visited an immigration lawyer with son Pierre before her tumultuous split from husband Paul Staehle. In the new Sunday, August 30, episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?, she inquired about heading back to her native country of Brazil following her relocation to the United States.

“Things are not well since I arrived in America,” the TLC alum, 23, told producers. Karine said she and Paul, 35, were constantly butting heads because she was not adapting well to her new surroundings and wasn’t pleased with their living situation.

The season 5 star had given Paul two months to find a job and he wasn’t able to find a full-time gig, so she decided to see what her options were. Karine said she was “desperate” for a change and had found an immigration lawyer named Rania with a Portuguese translator to offer some insight.

In her own confessional, Rania explained how “complicated” Karine’s situation was, especially because the reality star expected life to be easier in the U.S. and wasn’t having a good experience. However, she pointed out that if Karine left the country without Paul’s approval, it would likely make things worse between them.

“Theoretically, you have every right to take your child to go [to Brazil],” Rania told Karine, adding that decision could lead to “backlash” from her husband. “Paul has just as many rights as she does,” Rania noted. Ultimately, the immigration lawyer suggested Karine take Pierre on “good terms.”

While heading back home, Karine said she wanted the “best” for her son, even if that meant going back to Brazil.

Later on, Paul shared his side of the story and explained he couldn’t find a good job because of his criminal record. The duo sat down for a heart-to-heart and Paul was very upset to hear about Karine’s potential plans.

The reality star said it was “messed up” and if she proceeded, he would “prosecute” because he didn’t want their family to be torn apart without his consent. Karine told him she would never prevent him from seeing Pierre. As the conversation continued, she broke down in tears and he tried to console her.

Unfortunately, the drama didn’t end on TV. It later spilled onto social media after a dispute between them resulted in the cops visiting their home on July 30. As of August 15, both were granted restraining orders against each other.

Even though the drama has been intense on the show and behind-the-scenes, fans are hopeful the two can work out their differences for Pierre.

90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? airs on TLC on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
