’90 Day Fiancé’ Star Karine Martins Gets Mugged by a Machete-Wielding Thief in Brazil
Karine Martins and her boyfriend Paul Staehle can’t catch a break! While the other couples on TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé spin-off 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days have their own fair share of obstacles, it seems like their relationship has been doomed from the start. On a recent episode, Karine gets mugged by a machete-wielding thief just minutes after breaking up with Paul.
After Paul confessed his big secret to Karine, she decided to break up with him. “It’s not your choice, I’m not doing this anymore,” she told him as she walked away. Instead of chasing after Karine, Paul chose to walk away in the opposite direction, leaving Karine on her own.
As she walked across a field, Karine unknowingly walked into a crime scene and two people could be seen running away from the thief — who turned his attention to Karine, brandishing a machete. In Portuguese, he yelled at Karine to give him her cell phone and she obliged but fell to the ground crying out of fear after he took off to a wooded area.
Producers could be heard urgently making plans to get Karine out of harm’s way while she continued to cry. “I just want to go home, I don’t want to be here anymore,” she said as one of them stepped into the shot to comfort her. Local police showed up quickly and chased after the thief into the wooded area, and shots could be heard in the distance. “I want to leave,” Karine said, crying. “I’ve decided I don’t want to be with Paul anymore.”

Up until that point, things had been going pretty well in the Amazon — Paul arrived in Karine’s small town safely, he was able to convince her parents to let her stay with him in a hotel during his trip and he secured their blessing to propose to her. Once they were on their own, the couple got to spend quality time together, using an app to translate for them since they don’t speak the same language. They even went for a swim without contracting any foreign diseases and Karine not only agreed to take an STD and a pregnancy test — but the test results came back negative. Yet despite breaking up on the episode, the two have since gotten back together and are reportedly living in Brazil.
