Why Did ’90 Day Fiance’ Star Geoffrey Paschel Go to Prison? Details on His Charges
Coming clean. 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days star Geoffrey Paschel was keeping a major secret from his girlfriend, Varya Malina. After he finally confessed about his criminal history — including drug-related charges that eventually landed him in prison — Paschel, 41, will also have to reveal the truth about his past to her family.
In 1997, when Paschel was around 19 years old, he was arrested in Blount County, Tennessee for possession of a schedule VI controlled substance (which includes marijuana), possession of a schedule II controlled substance (which includes opiates/opioids, cocaine, methadone, methamphetamines, and amphetamines) with intent to resell, and possession of a schedule I controlled substance (which includes heroin and psychedelics like LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, and peyote/mescaline), according to court records obtained by In Touch. Paschel pleaded guilty to his charges in August 1999 and was sentenced to 11 months, 29 days in jail.
It was understandable that his girlfriend, Varya, was shocked and upset when he told her he served time for “selling drugs” during a scene in the April 12 episode. When Varya, 30, asked Paschel why he was involved in illegal drugs, he gave her an honest answer. “We were poor growing up, we were really poor. [It was] easy money,” Paschel explained.
“I still can’t understand that. Have you ever thought about families you have hurt by your actions?” the Russian beauty asked. “You know, my cousin died from that stuff. He was only 28 years old. The mother, she was inconsolable because she lost her son. I can’t believe you could help somebody to die.”
Paschel apologized and started to get emotional. “I get it,” Paschel said, as he held back tears. “And it affects me too. I don’t even like thinking about it, I don’t like thinking about the people I could’ve hurt. I made poor decisions. In the moment, when I was doing it, I didn’t see that type of thing. It’s after the fact, then you can look back,” Paschel said.
Varya then asked how Paschel would feel if his children were to follow in his footsteps. “Now you’re hitting home. I try to live by example now with my children, you know? I tell them I’m horribly against drugs,” Paschel said. He added that his sons know about his past, and they even visited him during his prison stint.
But Varya was still upset that Paschel did not disclose the truth about his past sooner. “If you told me, I would have never ever talked to you,” Varya said.
Paschel tried to explain to Varya that he learned from his past mistakes. “This is many many years ago, and if you look at me for me and who I am, especially who I am now, I hope that you can forgive me,” Paschel said. Fans will have to tune in to watch what happens next.
90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days airs on TLC Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
