Tom and Katie's Divorce Is Final!

Well, that was fast! Less than two months after Katie Holmes shocked the world — and then-husband Tom Cruise — by filing for divorce, the headline-making couple's five-year marriage has officially come to an end.

While neither Tom nor Katie's lawyers are discussing specifics, New York records indicate that the divorce was finalized on Aug. 20 — a surprisingly quiet resolution to what had promised to be a dramatic court battle.

Reportedly blindsided when Katie filed for divorce in New York on June 28, Tom issued a statement saying that he was "deeply saddened" by his wife's decision — and many believed he would use his considerable resources to fight for custody of their daughter, Suri, 6. But on July 9, TomKat surprised the world yet again by announcing they'd reached a settlement out of court, giving full custody to Katie, but allowing Tom generous visitation privileges.

Now that her final chapter in her over-the-top romance is officially over, Katie hopes to put the drama behind her — that is, until Tom shows up in New York on Sept. 11 for Suri's first day of school.
