But in the latest issue of Vogue, which features the 49-year-old star on the cover, Sandra is opening up about her post-divorce life—while remaining respectful to not only her ex-husband but also the details that led to their marriage’s demise.
“We’re all where we’re supposed to be,” she told the fashion glossy. “I am exactly where I want to be now. You can’t go backward. I’m not going backward. I’m grateful that I’m here, blessed to have what I have. Nobody can be prepared for anything.”
Sandra, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side shortly before her marriage crumbled, only has eyes for one man right now: Her 3-year-old son Louis.
The happiest moment in Sandra’s life was when she adopted Louis, who was born January 2010. The actress began the adoption process four years earlier with her husband, but by the time she brought Louis home in April 2010, she ultimately decided that she would raise Louis as a single mom.
And has never once looked back.
Sandra admits that she would do anything for her son—even quit her successful career, where she earns more than any other actress in Hollywood.
“I think this business can take the child out of kids so quickly,” she told Vogue. “I don’t want him to have pressures brought on by what I do. I will quit. I will leave. If I see whatever I’m doing affecting him negatively, I will pack up and move to Alaska.”
Vogue explained that Sandra and Louis have an evening ritual called the Grateful List, during which they share what they are thankful for. Louis will list off his possessions—his toys, his friends, etc. Sandra’s list is just Louis—because it’s him, not work, that now gives her life meaning.
“Work was my life before,” she said. “Now I have no reason to leave home.”
