As an attempt to help those struggling with addiction, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is opening up about his battle with prescription painkiller addiction, his stint in rehab and the reality show that drove him to addiction—and it wasn’t Jersey Shore!
The reality star sat down on Live From the Couch and spoke about how he first got involved with the opioid pills that ultimately landed him in rehab.
“I was on Dancing With the Stars in 2011 and I hurt my lower back and neck, and by a doctor, I was prescribed an opioid prescription painkiller,” he shared. “After months, I became dependent on this medication and I had to take it just to go on with my day.”
He added that—unlike illicit drugs—he had a prescription, which made him think it was “okay.”
While he said that he tried to live with this issue, and tried to hide his hardship before he finally realized he needed help.
The reality check came for the reality star when he was in Australia; he couldn’t get his hands on his medication and he had a hard time getting his act together.
“I was laying in my bed and I had to do an appearance for about one hour, my family was there, and I had everything laid out,” he told the morning show. “My family had the shirt laid out, the shoes laid out, the shower was on. All I had to do was just get up and walk in the shower and go to the event. I really couldn’t get up, I didn’t feel well. Right then and there I knew."
The next day he was on his way to rehab.
Since he received help, Mike is now doing his part to aid others struggling with addiction, through his involvement with Reset Reality—an advocacy organization for opioid addiction that he helped launch.
The Jersey Shore star is hoping to help others achieve his success and land him the positive place he now resides—which is a far cry from his battle in Australia.
“The situation is under control,” he said with a laugh when speaking of his addiction today.
