The world is about to become a far less steamy place. Eric Dane has announced he will be leaving the hit ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, which begins its ninth season on September 27.

"I am extremely grateful to everyone at Grey's, ABC and Shondaland for the experience and memories I have had over the course of this run,” the hunky actor said in a statement to TVLine on Thursday. “It has been wonderful to work alongside and learn from a creative force such as Shonda Rhimes."

Shonda, the show’s creator, hinted that it wouldn’t be the last we’ll see of Eric’s character, Dr. Mark Sloan (aka McSteamy), whose sweetheart, Lexie, was killed in a plane crash in the season eight finale.

"We're a big family here at Grey's with a long history together, and Eric will always remain an important part of our family," she told TVLine.

Sounds like we’ll get to see McSteamy scrub up one more time at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital before his proper send-off.
