Four months after choosing to serve a five-year jail term instead of completing a drug program, Teen Mom star Amber Portwood has opened up about her battle to remain sober.
The 22-year-old reality star released a statement from her jail cell at Indiana State Penitentiary in which she discusses her addiction and her plans for her future.
“Right now I’m trying to figure out what I’m doing with my life,” Amber wrote. “I guess I got lost.”
“I went to jail because I had an addiction to opiates. You live and you learn and that’s real. It was time for me to stop partying and realize that even though I am 21, I’m not a normal 21-year-old. I’m a mother. Which means I have to grow up quicker and start acting like a mother.”
The statement was read out loud during a broadcast with Dr. Drew, filmed to coincide with Tuesday’s MTV Teen Mom reunion special.
Despite the somber nature of the letter, Amber proved she is positive about her future.
“My No. 1 priority right now in life is dedicating my life to being sober, to being a sober person. And to show my daughter that people make mistakes but you can always come back,” she said. "I want to show everybody that I can do it and I can start living a straight life and getting my family back in order.”
Amber checked in to serve her jail term in May following a probation violation stemming from a 2011 drug possession conviction.
