So sad. X-Men: Apocalypse star James McAvoy and his actress wife Anne-Marie Duff announced they’re getting a divorce after nearly 10 years of marriage. They have one child together, six-year-old son Brendan.

“It is with tremendous sadness that we have come to the decision to divorce,” they said through their reps in a joint statement. “‎We enter this next phase with continued friendship, love and respect for one another and the shared focus of caring for our son. We ask that you respect our and, most importantly, our child’s privacy during this time.”

James, 37, and Anne-Marie, 45, first met in 2004 on the set of the TV show Shameless. They got married in October 2006 and costarred in the acclaimed film The Last Station in 2009, welcoming their son Brendan a year later.

They were famously private about their personal lives, choosing only to be in the spotlight when promoting their work. “We’ve played it very cautiously,” James told USA Today in a 2011 interview. “We don’t like going to parties or premieres if we’re not involved. If my career isn’t going that well, I’d rather it flounder than desperately trying to show up on red carpets: ‘I’m for hire! Remember me!'”

The Scottish actor will be reprising his role as X-Men‘s Professor X this week, on May 19. Anne-Marie, who is British, was last seen in Suffragette in the fall.

Here’s hoping that James, Anne-Marie and their son get through this very difficult time.
